What is Computer Networking?

The Computer Networking program is an instructional program that focuses on the design, implementation, and management of linked systems of computers and peripherals. The study of computer repair, networking, and the internet and intranet systems. This program is based on the Cisco Networking Academy Curriculum. Cisco is one of the leading hardware manufacturers of Network equipment and offers one of the most vigorous certification programs. The curriculum is compliant with the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications requirements. Students will be prepared to take: A+, Network +, and CCNA Certifications.  Completion of the program may lead to industry certification in multiple areas and post-secondary credits at a number of local institutions.  Computer technology is one of the fastest growing occupations in the State and Nationally according to the US Department of Labor.

Is it for You?

Much of the work performed by professionals in this field is repetitive and routine-based. Additionally, students seeking to apply for this program should like working with computers and solving problems. Employees in this fieId usually work full time (five days, forty hours a week), though some overtime may be required in certain situations. The workplace typically consists of a mixture of independent and cooperative work, usually in cool, air-conditioned spaces; depending on the type of work, some interaction with the general public may be required. Additionally, successful students will possess the following skills:

  • Manual dexterity.

  • A logical mind to be able to analyze problems.

  • Ability to concentrate on tasks at hand.

  • Good eyesight, either naturally or with correction.

  • Above average math skills

  • Clerical speed and accuracy.
