In Pennsylvania, the demand for skilled tradespeople continues to grow, and Evan Motter, a senior at Northern York High School, is making a significant mark in the masonry field. For many high school students, the idea of college immediately after graduation seems like the natural path. However, for this aspiring mason, the concept of attending a traditional four-year college wasn’t as appealing. "The idea of attending college wasn’t something I was interested in pursuing,"; instead, he was drawn to the hands-on world of skilled trades. “I wanted to explore life in trades,” he shared, realizing that CPACTC offered the opportunity to develop practical skills that could lead to a fulfilling career.
Initially, Evan applied to the welding program at CPACTC, but after not being accepted into welding, he was offered the opportunity to enroll in the masonry program. While the shift may have been unexpected, it quickly became clear that masonry was the right fit. His newfound passion for masonry led him to dive deeper into the trade, where he began learning the craft and techniques that would serve as the foundation of his future career.
One of the most valuable aspects of CPACTC is its co-op capstone program, which connects students with local businesses for hands-on work experience. Evan chose to participate in the program to gain a better understanding of life on a job site. “I really wanted to find out what life was like on the job site,” he explained. After connecting with Waggoner Construction at the Spring Career Fair, the opportunity to work there was a perfect fit. “I thought it would be a good place to continue to learn the masonry trade,” he said.
At Waggoner Construction, Evan’s role is dynamic and varied. He assists with masonry work and general labor, ensuring that any tasks assigned to him are completed to the best of his ability. His responsibilities don’t stop at just one specific task. He is expected to be adaptable, problem-solving on a daily basis, as construction sites often present new challenges. One of the unexpected benefits of working at Waggoner Construction has been the opportunity to learn skills beyond just masonry. “I am learning more about the construction trades beyond masonry… which is expanding my skill set!” This broader experience will undoubtedly be an asset as he moves forward in his career, opening up a variety of potential opportunities in the future.
After graduation, Evan’s plan is clear: continue working in the trade and seek further opportunities to learn. “I want to continue to work; however, I want to continue to learn too, so I will take on those opportunities as they come,” he said. This desire for lifelong learning is crucial in the ever-evolving construction industry, where new techniques and materials are constantly emerging.
When asked what advice he would give to other students considering co-op placements, Evan stressed the importance of hard work and a willingness to learn. “Work hard during your Level 1 and Level 2 years… and always be willing to learn something new,” he advised. This mindset not only sets students up for success during their co-op experience but also in their careers as skilled tradespeople.
